In February 2009, a group of prairie-based grain companies joined forces to reach the common goal of accessing innovative and top-performing varieties for their customers. Alliance Seed Corporation (ASC) was born as a joint venture of Parrish & Heimbecker, Paterson Grain, Great Sandhills Terminal, Prairie West Terminal, North West Terminal and Weyburn Inland Terminal.
"The Key to providing value throughout the food chain involves gaining access to proprietary genetics and varietal development," states ASC general manager, Dale Alderson. "That's true for not only the farm customer but also for the end use customer such as millers, bakers, maltsters and brewers."
ASC works closely with local seed growers as well as local stakeholders to grow its retail seed business. By fostering creative and effective relationships between seed growers and retailers, ASC is working to be an important distributor of seed in Western Canada.
"We're looking for genetics that provide value to grain end users while at the same time giving plant breeders input regarding the needs of end users," says Alderson. He argues that this approach is the way to bring increased value to various levels of the grain industry—farmers, seed growers, grain handlers, end users and ultimately, the consumer.
